FIFA World Cup 2022: Neymar suffers ankle sprain in Brazil win

DOHA:The Brazil captain Neymar, who was injured in his team's World Cup victory over Serbia on Thursday, will undergo a medical evaluation within the next 48 hours, according to the team doctor.

According to Doctor Rodrigo Lasmar, the Brazilian superstar was involved in a collision with his opponent and sustained the injury.

The substitution of Neymar occurred in the 79th minute of Brazil's 2-0 victory over Serbia.

Lasmar stated, "We need to wait 24 to 48 hours to have a better assessment."We have no MRI scheduled, and tomorrow we will conduct a new evaluation.

"We cannot make any prescient remarks about his evolution; we must wait."

After the game, Neymar could be seen limping heavily, and photos of the striker showed swelling on his right ankle.

The Paris Saint-Germain player initially stayed on the field "because the team needed him," according to Coach Tite.

In addition, he moved to allay concerns that the 30-year-old player might face a layoff that would last long enough to end his World Cup campaign.

He stated, "You can be certain that Neymar will play in the World Cup."

Neymar refused to speak with reporters as he left the stadium on Thursday, appearing depressed.

Neymar only needs to score two goals to match Pele's record of 77 for Brazil.

In Brazil's quarterfinal victory over Colombia in 2014, he broke a bone in his back, ending his first World Cup in agony.

The hosts were humiliated when they lost 7-1 to Germany in the semi-finals without him.

After four years Neymar needed to competition to recuperate from injury so as to be good for the competition in Russia, however Brazil never hit the levels expected of them as they lost to Belgium in the last eight.

Due to torn ligaments in his right ankle, the Brazilian talisman also missed the 2019 Copa America tournament.

Neymar suffered ligament damage to his left ankle during PSG's victory over Saint Etienne in 2021, requiring him to miss roughly 10 weeks of the French season.
