Taiwan is jolted by a shallow 6.2-magnitude earthquake

Shallow 6.2-magnitude earthquake jolts Taiwan

TAIPEI: Taiwan's weather bureau reported on Thursday that a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the island's eastern coast, causing tremors in Taipei, the capital.

The tremor hit soon after late morning (0400 GMT) around 30 kilometers (19 miles) off the shoreline of Hualien District at a shallow profundity of six kilometers.

A reading of a lower 5.9 magnitude and a depth of 12 kilometers were reported by the US Geological Survey.

There were no injuries or damages immediately reported.

Due to its proximity to the intersection of two tectonic plates, Taiwan experiences earthquakes on a regular basis.

Although a lot depends on where and how deep the earthquake strikes, some earthquakes of 6.0 magnitude or greater can be fatal.

According to an AFP reporter in Taipei, the capital felt less shaken than in previous years.

In September, a much stronger earthquake measuring 6.9 magnitude struck Taiwan's eastern coast, killing one person and destroying several buildings.
