Golden Globes 2023: SS Rajamouli's RRR wins for "Naatu Naatu's" Best Original Song

At the 80th Golden Globes, which are regarded as an important prelude to the Oscars, the acclaimed historical epic RRR directed by SS Rajamouli was up for two awards.

The track "Naatu Naatu," which became something of an anthem for fans of director SS Rajamouli's RRR, was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Original Song by composer MM Keeravani and singers Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj. At the 80th Golden Globes, the historical epic is also up for a nomination for Best Non-English Language Film.

The Globes, which are regarded as an important prelude to the Oscars, are coming out of a significant controversy that led the industry to largely blacklist them for more than a year. The event is returning to television after an under-the-radar 2022 edition after fundamental changes were implemented behind the scenes, primarily in relation to diversity and transparency.

The dance number "Naatu Naatu," which featured Jr. NTR and Ram Charan, competed with Taylor Swift's "Carolina" from "Where the Crawdads Sing," "Ciao Papa" from "Pinocchio," and Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand" from "Top Gun: Maverick and Black Panther's "Lift Me Up": Rihanna's Wakanda Forever song. "Naatu Naatu," a dance-off number in which NTR Jr. and Ram Charan play the main characters who challenge the British oppressors, became well-known for its intricate choreography and musical storytelling.

Over a decade ago, India won the award for Best Original Score for Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, which was won by AR Rahman. In the same category, Rahman was also up for a nomination for Boyle's sequel, 127 Hours. In 1957, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, directed by V Shantaram, won the equivalent of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Even though Gandhi was not a foreign production, Richard Attenborough's film won the Globe in the same category.

After its Hindi-language release on Netflix earlier this year, RRR quickly established itself as a cult favorite in the United States. It was re-released in theaters after attracting devoted fans, culminating in a legendary screening at Hollywood's storied Chinese Theatre that sold out. Following that, the movie became a contender for awards, receiving two Globes nominations and five Critics' Choice Awards nominations. It has been in the running for two Oscar shortlists and one BAFTA shortlist. RRR was on many American critics' top 10 lists, and Rajamouli recently won the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle award for Best Director.

It will now be watched closely to see if it receives any nominations at the prestigious BAFTAs and Oscars, which will be announced on January 24 and January 19.
