Bangladesh's next president will be a former judge

A former judge is set to become Bangladesh’s next president

DHAKA: Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu, a former judge and freedom fighter, will be Bangladesh's next president after being nominated for the position by the ruling Awami League, which has an absolute majority in parliament.

After President Mohammad Abdul Hamid's term ends on April 24, Chuppu, 74, will take over. "His (Chuppu's) nomination paper, which was submitted by the Bangladesh Awami League, has been received by the EC," a spokesperson for the independent statutory body stated.

He stated that the EC would now complete the necessary formalities for his election by parliamentarians. The 350-member House has 305 seats for the Awami League. The longest-serving president of the nation, Hamid, will step down on April 23, and the Constitution prohibits him from running for a third term. After Shahabuddin's nomination was submitted, Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presented him with a bouquet.
