Development work in Delhi has been halted for 'petty political gains': L-G

Given that police reports for such action were negative and would result in a situation involving law and order, Sisodia had stated on Monday that the designs of projects to build highways and government housing should be altered to eliminate the requirement to remove the roughly 70 unlicensed religious structures.

Tuesday, Raj Niwas officials confronted Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, claiming that Sisodia and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had given their blessing to the plan to demolish nine illegal religious structures in order to construct the Delhi-Saharanpur Expressway.

Given that police reports for such action were negative and would result in a situation involving law and order, Sisodia had stated on Monday that the designs of projects to build highways and government housing should be altered to eliminate the requirement to remove the roughly 70 unlicensed religious structures.

“I would like to underscore the dichotomous stance taken by the Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister in this matter, wherein, while on the one hand he had approved the proposal of removing religious structures, on file, in public he resorted to a diametrically opposite rhetoric on 12.02.2023 and again 20.02.2023,” L-G VK Saxena wrote in a file noting the decongestion of 77 arterial corridors and development of government residential colonies made

Saxena wrote, citing decisions from the High Court and Supreme Court that prohibited the construction of religious buildings without permission: At the risk of repeating myself, I have reiterated the preceding in the hope that you will appreciate and, as a result, implement the letter and spirit of the aforementioned pronouncements in the interest of Delhi, India's capital, and its citizens, to whom you owe good governance. The same is expected to be communicated to your Cabinet colleagues, who will also be advised not to politicize issues in the name of religion.

Additionally, Raj Niwas officials stated that in December, the L-G received a proposal to remove nine out of 23 flagged unauthorised religious structures in order to construct the Delhi-Saharanpur expressway. Kejriwal and Sisodia both confirmed this. In this regard, inquiries were not answered by the Delhi government.

In addition, Saxena stated that proposals for the decongestion of roads and the development of residential colonies were being blocked for "petty political gain," and that the government was to blame for the delay in city development. In addition to displaying pure hypocrisy, the fact that this is being done for petty political gain is regrettable. It also amounts to a flagrant and willful violation of the orders of the courts.
