During its 4,007 screenings, Creed III generated approximately $58.7 million in North American ticket sales. The movie was expected to make about $30 million its first weekend, according to analysts.
In its first weekend in theaters, Creed III performed above its weight at the domestic box office. Ant-Man and the Wasp was shattered by the MGM release: Quantumania came in first and far outperformed both the expectations of the industry and the opening weekends of the first two films in the franchise.
Playing in 4,007 areas in North America, Doctrine III procured an expected $58.7 million in ticket deals, as per studio gauges Sunday. Analysts anticipated that the film would open in the $30 million range heading into the weekend. In 2015, the first Creed made $29 million, and in 2018, Creed II made $35 million.
Creed III, in which his character Adonis faces off against Jonathan Majors' Dame, a childhood friend, marked Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut. It is the first Rocky/Creed movie without Sylvester Stallone, who decided not to return due to differences in creative vision.
"This is past our assumptions as a whole. MGM's head of distribution, Erik Lomis, stated, "We knew that we had something special — we tested the movie and it tested great, but the public responded so resoundingly to it." Everything, beginning with the movie itself, happened right here. It was up to us to keep it from being damaged when they gave it to us, which we did.
Creed III, which received an A- CinemaScore from audiences and has a rating of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, benefited from favorable reviews. According to exit polls, the audience was predominantly male (63%), diverse (36% Black, 28% Latino, 23% white, and 13% Asian/other), and young (55% between the ages of 18 and 34).
The film received a "definite recommend" rating from over 80% of general audiences. That number soared to 89% among Black audiences.
Lomis stated, "I've been doing this for a long time, and that's rarefied air." The movie is well received.
It is also the most expensive Creed film, with a reported $75 million production budget compared to $35 million and $50 million for the others. Creed III brought in $41.8 million from 75 markets worldwide, making its global debut $100.4 million.
It is a significant moment for Amazon, which could have simply released Creed III on its streaming service with a limited theatrical run after purchasing MGM for $8.5 billion last year. However, their decision to go theatrical paid off.
Lomis stated, "Amazon threw their weight behind this movie like only they can." They added marketing support for all of their verticals on the platform and outside of it to the campaign. That demonstrates Amazon and MGM's dedication to the theatrical business model, which I believe should excite everyone.
Air, starring Matt Damon and directed by Ben Affleck, will be the company's next major theatrical release next month.
