Glenn Maxwell has retired from T20 internationals, closing the last active part of his Australia career. The International Cricket Council reported the decision on 2 November 2026. He had already retired from one-day internationals in June 2025.
This is a departure from national cricket, not the sport itself. Cricket Australia says the 38-year-old will continue with Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. His contract runs to the end of the 2027–28 season.
What his retirement covers
Maxwell is also stepping away from Victoria’s List A and first-class cricket, Cricket Australia reports. List A is the domestic one-day format. He last played a first-class match in 2023.
His final international appearance came against Oman at the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, according to the ICC. He finished with 130 T20 internationals, 2,897 runs and five centuries in that format.
The career he leaves behind
Across formats, Maxwell played 149 ODIs and seven Tests for Australia alongside those 130 T20 internationals. He was part of the country’s men’s ODI World Cup-winning teams in 2015 and 2023 and its 2021 T20 World Cup-winning side, the ICC records.
His ODI double century against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup remains one of the innings associated with that career. His retirement ends his Australia appearances, while his Big Bash career continues.
