ISRO is targeting the fourth quarter of 2026 for the first uncrewed flight in India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme. The mission would carry no astronauts. It is planned as the first of three uncrewed flights before India attempts its maiden human orbital mission.

ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan gave the latest update during the third National Space Day event in Ahmedabad on August 23, 2026. He said the first uncrewed mission could launch within four months and that the programme was in its “final leg”.

Narayanan also said ISRO had completed 8,000 tests. That figure, reported by NDTV from his address, describes the scale of the wider programme. It does not mean every remaining qualification or mission-readiness step is complete.

What the first flight is meant to do

Gaganyaan is India’s programme to develop the launch vehicle, spacecraft, ground systems and operational capability needed to send Indian astronauts into orbit using an Indian vehicle.

The first flight will be experimental and uncrewed. According to the government’s August 6 roadmap to the Rajya Sabha, it is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026 and is expected to carry Vyommitra, ISRO’s half-humanoid system.

The purpose is to validate technologies being developed for the programme under flight conditions without placing people aboard. A successful launch would be an important milestone, but it would not itself complete India’s first human spaceflight.

The government says two additional uncrewed missions are targeted for 2027. Those flights are expected to use the configuration planned for the first crewed mission. Only after that sequence would India proceed towards its maiden human orbital flight.

Why the “final leg” still involves extensive testing

Human spaceflight systems must work across launch, flight, re-entry, splashdown and recovery. They also need safeguards for failures that may occur at different points in the mission.

The government told Parliament that the propulsion stages and structures of the human-rated launch vehicle had completed development and ground testing. It also reported progress on the crew and service modules, life-support engineering model, thermal protection, deceleration system, avionics and crew escape system.

Important ground infrastructure has also been established, including facilities for preparing the orbital module, controlling the mission and training the crew. Recovery assets have been identified and a recovery plan has been prepared.

These are substantial milestones, but the official language remains careful. The late-2026 flight is “targeted”, not announced for a fixed launch date. Testing, qualification and mission reviews can still affect the schedule.

Recent tests focused on splashdown and recovery

Several recent tests show why the programme extends beyond building a rocket and capsule.

On July 7, ISRO conducted an air-drop qualification test of a main parachute intended for the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission, also known as G1. The crew module’s deceleration system uses ten parachutes of four types in a staged sequence to stabilise and slow the capsule before it reaches the sea.

For the July test, a simulated assembly containing one main parachute and a dummy mass was dropped from an Indian Air Force aircraft. ISRO said the fifth test in the series added confidence in the main parachute’s structural performance and reliability.

ISRO also reported three crew-module qualification tests on July 12. They examined the system that helps turn the capsule upright after splashdown, the separation of an umbilical connection between the crew and service modules, and the crew module’s ability to withstand loads created when the cover protecting its parachutes separates.

Each test addresses a specific part of the return sequence. Together, they help build the evidence needed before astronauts can be exposed to the same systems.

What remains before astronauts fly

The first uncrewed flight must still move from a target to a confirmed launch date. It then has to demonstrate its systems during an actual mission and support the programme’s later qualification decisions.

Work is also continuing towards another test-vehicle mission, TV-D2, according to the government’s August update. The two additional uncrewed flights targeted for 2027 must follow before the first crewed attempt.

That sequence is the central point for readers. Gaganyaan is a human spaceflight programme, but the next planned launch is not a human spaceflight. It is a safety and systems test intended to reduce uncertainty before anyone is placed aboard.

If the late-2026 target holds, the flight would mark a major transition from ground qualification to an integrated mission. The more consequential milestone, India independently sending astronauts into orbit, comes later and does not yet have a confirmed date in the current official roadmap.
