NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has reached Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida and is scheduled to launch on Sunday, August 30, 2026. NASA’s August 29 mission update says the observatory will ride a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

Liftoff is targeted for 7:26 a.m. EDT, or 11:26 UTC. For viewers in India, that is 4:56 p.m. IST. The time remains conditional because weather, technical checks or countdown conditions could still delay the attempt.

The final review cleared Roman for countdown

NASA and SpaceX completed the mission’s launch readiness review on August 28. According to NASA’s review update, the process checked the Falcon Heavy rocket, the Roman observatory, weather conditions and the teams supporting the launch.

At that review, the US Space Force’s Space Launch Delta 45 Weather Squadron predicted a 60% chance of favourable weather for the planned liftoff. That figure describes the forecast reported on August 28, not a guarantee for launch day.

Roman is built to survey a much wider sky

Roman’s main instrument is a 300-megapixel infrared camera called the Wide Field Instrument. NASA says it is designed to produce images with angular resolution comparable to Hubble’s while covering a field of view at least 100 times larger.

According to NASA’s mission primer, one Roman image will cover a patch of sky about 1.5 times the apparent size of a full Moon. The value of that broad view is scale. Instead of examining only a narrow area at a time, astronomers will be able to survey large populations of galaxies, stars and planetary systems.

Roman also carries a Coronagraph Instrument. It is a technology demonstration designed to block the glare from stars so scientists can study faint light reflected by some planets orbiting them. Its results are intended to test techniques for future missions, not guarantee the discovery of a particular world.

What scientists hope to learn

NASA designed Roman to investigate dark energy, dark matter and planets beyond our solar system. These are broad research goals rather than promised outcomes.

The observatory’s surveys could help scientists examine how galaxies are distributed across space and how the universe has changed over time. Its planetary studies are intended to build a statistical picture of the different kinds of planetary systems found in our galaxy.

Roman is expected to complement existing observatories. Its wide panoramas can identify large-scale patterns and interesting targets, while telescopes such as Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope can provide more detailed observations of selected objects. NASA’s Roman mission overview describes this combination of wide coverage and detailed follow-up as a central part of the mission’s scientific role.

Launch will be only the beginning

If the launch proceeds, Roman will travel about one million miles from Earth to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, known as L2. This is the same broad observing region used by the James Webb Space Telescope.

NASA expects deployments, calibration and testing to take about three months before science operations begin. The agency currently expects to release Roman’s first science images in early 2027.

The primary mission is planned to last five years, with the spacecraft designed to support a possible five-year extension. The immediate milestone, however, is the August 30 launch attempt. Its timing should be checked against NASA’s latest update before publication or viewing.
