24 November supermoon: when to look from Chennai

By megan

NASA expects a full supermoon on 24 November 2026. In Chennai, moonrise is listed for 5:19 p.m. IST, though the change in apparent size may be hard to spot.

NASA expects a full supermoon on 24 November 2026. It is a chance to watch the Moon rise in the evening, but “supermoon” does not mean it will suddenly look enormous.

When should I look from Chennai?

The Moon is due to rise at 5:19 p.m. IST on 24 November, according to Timeanddate’s Chennai moonrise table. NASA’s November skywatching guide recommends looking east around sunset to watch it rise.

The exact full phase occurs around 8:25 p.m. IST. You can watch the rise without trying to catch that precise moment. An open view of the eastern sky will help; clouds may limit what you can see.

What makes this a supermoon?

The Moon follows a slightly oval path around Earth, so its distance changes. A supermoon occurs when a full Moon coincides with a closer part of that orbit, as NASA explains. It can appear somewhat larger and brighter than an average full Moon, although the difference is subtle.

If the Moon seems especially large near the horizon, that is also influenced by the Moon illusion. NASA says this familiar effect can occur with any full Moon.

When is the next one?

NASA’s supermoon calendar lists another for 24 December 2026. The dates describe the Moon’s orbit and phase; local viewing still depends on the sky.
