UPI recorded fewer transactions in September 2026 than in August, but its average per day rose. The distinction matters because September has 30 days and August has 31.

Monthly totals fell

According to NPCI's UPI product statistics, September saw 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore, compared with 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 lakh crore in August. The monthly totals fell about 1.8% by count and 1.5% by value.

Daily averages rose

Dividing each monthly total by its number of days gives about 802 million transactions a day in September, up from about 791 million in August. Average daily transaction value rose to about ₹97,913 crore from about ₹96,205 crore. These are calculations from NPCI's monthly figures, not separate daily estimates from NPCI.

The monthly decline therefore does not show a decline in average daily transaction activity. The figures count transactions, not individual payers or the purposes of payments. NPCI excludes transactions that debit and credit the same account from these statistics.
